Jill S. Crafts Summer Scholars Program
Rising Tide Charter Public School is excited to present a unique summer program opportunity for current middle school students entering grades six through nine in 2020-2021. This program is limited to 10 students.
The program runs for two weeks: July 13-24.
This program will be open to students seeking to develop their personal connection to the local Plymouth region. Named for Rising Tide’s first head of school, the Jill S. Crafts Summer Scholars Program intends to promote the school’s mission of cultivating within students a sense of belonging by engaging and educating students more about Plymouth’s natural landscape and by giving them the tools to help preserve and protect this region.
Participating students will work in collaboration with the Southeastern Massachusetts Pine Barrens Association (SMPBA) to learn more about the rare, Massachusetts Coastal Pine Barrens ecoregion in South Plymouth and work with volunteers from the SMPBA to address some of the environmental threats posed to this area. Students will work on site at the SMPBA headquarters at the Center Hill Preserve throughout the two week program. They will work with conservationists and scientists on a “bioblitz,” or an intensive biological survey in an attempt to record all the living species within the ten designated ecosystems within the Center Hill Preserve property. The important data that students collect will be used by SMPBA and the town of Plymouth conservationists. Further, students will create a citizen science project on the SMPBA site, which will engage visitors to the facility.
The program will culminate in a formal presentation given by the students to families, members of the school community, and members of SMPBA to showcase the work they accomplished over the two week period. Students and families will also be invited to a cookout reception at the SMPBA headquarters after the presentations. Participating students will be acknowledged within our school community as “Crafts Scholars” for the 2020-2021 academic year.
This program will run Monday through Friday, from July 13-24, 2020. Ten students will be selected to participate through an application process and their tuition for the program will be paid in full. Interested students must complete and submit an application to the middle school office to the attention of Mrs. McCullough or Dr. Vendetti. If you have any questions, please contact the school office at 508-747-2620.
